It was as if an earthquake rent

The hearth-stones of a continent,

And made forlorn

The households born

Of peace on earth, good-will to men!

And in despair I bowed my head;

“There is no peace on earth,” I said;

“For hate is strong,

And mocks the song

Then pealed the bells more loud and deep:

“God is not dead; nor doth he sleep!

The Wrong shall fail,

The Right prevail,

With peace on earth, good-will to men.”

It’s a beautiful reminder of how, even when our nation seemed irreconcilably divided, the hope of Christmas testified to the certainty of future peace. And I remember that every time I hear it sung by carolers.

I have such fond memories of the tough little boys in our group, who with only a bit of encouragement stood shoulder to shoulder belting out tunes and laughing. The girls were always up front, tussling over which song they wanted to sing next. Rushing through the final verse to get to the next one they couldn’t wait to start.
